GA (Graduate Assistant) Training Protocol

The University has made an annual fund of $80,000 available to Researchers who hire a GA (Graduate Assistant) on an external grant. The fund is available for two years, with the first call in December 2019 and the second call in Summer 2020.

The fund is limited; awards will cease once expended. Researchers are limited to receiving the award once, meaning if you have accessed the award in 19/20, you will be unable to receive it in 20/21.

Eligible GA Assignments

Those assignments eligible to receive up to a $2,000 award to the Researcher include:

  • GA assignments supported by a Researcher’s external grant
  • GA assignments that began in Fall 2019
  • GA assignments that begin in Winter 2020
  • GA assignments that begin in Summer 2020

A Graduate Assistantship is defined as Unit 3 – CUPE 3903. It includes any work related to administrative, clerical or research work. Assignments have time restrictions (a maximum of 135 hours per term), with additional employer (Researcher) paid health and vacation benefits.

Call for 2020/2021 – How to Apply

The call will be issued July 15, 2020. Researchers are asked to complete the application here.

Process

Up to $2,000 will be transferred to the Researcher’s generic cost centre. If the Researcher does not have an generic cost centre, please note on the application form. FGS will work with you to set one up to receive the funds.

Limitations

The award is limited to $2,000 per Researcher. Those who received support in 19/20 are ineligible to receive in 20/21. Applications are processed in order of receipt, until the annual fund amount of $80,000.00 is expended. Funds must be used to pay a Graduate Assistantship. The University will audit recipients of this fund as required to verify use of funds towards a GAship. Awards can only be deposited to generic cost centres.
